Jorge Maldonado, MD

Doctor Jorge Maldonado completed medical school and internal medicine residency training at the Universidad Francisco MarroquĂ­n in his country of origin, Guatemala. He then moved to Houston, Texas where he completed his psychiatric residency training in 1996 and a Fellowship in Psychosomatic Medicine in 1997, both at Baylor College of Medicine, and a fellowship in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy in 1996 at the Houston- Galveston Psychoanalytic Institute.

Doctor Maldonado is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in General Psychiatry and Psychosomatic Medicine.

He has been in private practice since completing his training, and has been established in San Antonio since 2002, where he has been dedicated to the care of patients in the outpatient setting and has worked extensively in the medical center hospitals. His training in both, medical and biological aspects of mental illness, as well as the psychodynamic factors that affect individuals’ development, allow him to understand and treat patients with a comprehensive and practical approach.

Dr. Maldonado works with patients of all ages, and enjoys working with families as well. He is fully fluent in English and Spanish.

Angela Velez, MD

Dr. Angela Vélez completed medical school at the Instituto de Ciencias de la Salud “CES” in her country of origin, Colombia. She then moved to San Antonio, TX where she completed her Psychiatry residency training in 2005 and two fellowships, in Geriatric Psychiatry in 2006 and Clinical Neurophysiology in 2007, at the University of Texas Health Science Center.

Doctor VĂ©lez is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in General Psychiatry and Sleep Medicine. She worked at the University of Texas Health Science Center at the Department of Neurology as an Assistant Professor for seven years. There she worked extensively with patients with neurological conditions and psychiatric comorbidities. During that time she was the medical director of the Sleep Lab at University Hospital where she interpreted polysomnograms as well as MSLTS on a daily bases.

Doctor VĂ©lez decided to move to private practice in September 2014. She has expertise on treating patients with Neurological conditions and psychiatric comorbidities as well as diagnosing and treating sleep disorders.

She is fluent in English as well as in Spanish.

Hector Suncin, MD

Dr. Hector Suncin is a physician graduated from medical school at Universidad Dr. Jose Matias Delgado in his country of origin, El Salvador. He then moved to Brooklyn, New York where he completed his psychiatric residency training in 2014 and a Fellowship in Psychoanalysis at NYU Institute for Psychoanalytic Education in New York City, New York also in 2014. Dr. Suncin then moved to Houston, Texas where he completed a Fellowship in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry at The University of Texas in 2016.

Since the completion of his training he has been dedicated to the care of patients in the outpatient setting providing a comprehensive and holistic treatment of the biological, psychiatric and social aspects related to mental illness and is now incorporated to Psychosomatic Institute of San Antonio since 2019.

Dr. Suncin works with patients of all ages, and enjoys working with families as well. He is fully fluent in English and Spanish.

Ricardo Calderon, PMHNP-BC

Ricardo Calderon, PMHNP-BC completed his Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi and his Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) at the University of Texas Health Science Center-San Antonio, with a focus in Mental Health as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner. He grew up in Corpus Christi, TX but upon acceptance to the program at UTHSCSA he and his family decided to officially become permanent San Antonio residents in 2014. He started his career as a registered nurse in 2010 and has worked on various inpatient units including: cardiac telemetry, general medical-surgical, child psychiatric, adolescent psychiatric, adult psychiatric, and adult detox.

Ricardo is board certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC).

He has been in private practice since completing his training in 2016 and continues to serve our local community. His training at UTHSCSA has taught him how to understand and treat the patient as a whole, using a collaborative approach to achieve and maintain an optimal level of mental health and wellness.

Ricardo treats the adult population for diagnoses including but not limited to: depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, PTSD, mood disorders, schizophrenia, ADHD, eating disorders, and OCD. He is available to treat via telehealth once an initial in person appointment has been established.

Sarah Kane, MSN, PMHNP-BC

Sarah Kane, PMHNP-BC completed her Master degree as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, and received high honors upon graduation. She completed her Bachelor degree in nursing at the University of Texas at Arlington, and her Associate degree in nursing at San Antonio College.

She has a wide range of professional experience, working closely with patients in emergency, operating room, obstetric, and women’s health settings since 2009. She has worked with patients in San Antonio, Austin, Houston, and Corpus Christi, TX, and Denver, CO. She uses a biopsychosocial approach, and has a passion for helping patients obtain optimal health while treating the entire individual. She is excited to practice again in her home town of San Antonio, TX.

Sarah Kane is board certified through the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC). Her training has prepared her to treat patients throughout the lifespan, and she enjoys caring for patients from age eight and up.

Valerie Thomas, MSN, ACNP, PMHNP-BC

NP Valerie Thomas has been a practicing Advanced Practice Nurse since 2002. Following her graduation with honors from The University of Texas at Austin with a Master of Science in Nursing, she completed 2 subsequent masters programs and has earned dual board certifications from the American Nurses Credentialing Center, as both an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner and a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner.

Her experience has included over 16 years providing critical care management in the intensive care setting, and since 2015, providing psychiatric mental health for both a general psychiatry practice and for an addiction medicine practice.

Valerie is motivated to provide clients with the best possible mental health care and empower individuals in their health care decisions. Her approach includes incorporating evidence-based treatments from traditional Psychopharmacology, Integrative and Functional Medicine.

She is qualified in many psychotherapies and has completed trauma and mindfulness-based therapies beyond graduate education.

Christina Vasquez, PhD, APRN, PMHNP-BC, CARN-AP

Christina Vasquez is a Board-Certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC) who is also certified as an addiction nurse practitioner (CARN-AP). She has over 20 years of combined experience assisting teens, adults, and seniors who are seeking help in coping with depression, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, substance use disorders, trauma, and stress-related disorders.

Christina earned her Masters degree in Nursing and graduated Summa cum laude from Walden University. She also obtained her PhD in addiction counseling to better assist those who are dealing with a substance use disorder. Her goal is to help clients understand how to safely and effectively manage their disorder by offering evidence-based medication management, psychoeducation, support, and true empathetic care. Christina has the ability to empathize with patients while building a caring and therapeutic relationship. Christina utilizes a holistic approach and wants to help her patients achieve their best quality of life while reducing the stigma associated with mental health and substance use disorders.

With Christina as your psychiatric nurse, you can rest assured that you will be heard and seen with compassion. Her number one goal is to listen and assist you in any way that she can.

Marisa Gonzales DNP, APRN, PMHNP-BC

Marisa Gonzales is a board-certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP- BC) with a robust background in both medical and military service. She graduated with honors from The University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio, where she earned her Doctorate in Nursing Practice (DNP), emphasizing psychiatric mental health. She dedicated six years of service in the United States Air Force, which instilled in her a profound sense of discipline and commitment.

With over nine years of experience as a medical acute and critical care registered nurse, Marisa brings compassion and understanding to create a supportive therapeutic environment for you. She is dedicated to addressing your mental health needs with an evidence-based approach, offering both psychoeducation and medication management.

Marisa aims to inspire hope while building a strong therapeutic relationship with you. As your psychiatric nurse practitioner, Marisa will work with you to manage mood and stress-related disorders, depression, trauma, and anxiety. Her goal is to make a lasting positive impact on your life and overall well-being.

Lupita Elizondo, LPC-S

Lupita Elizondo received her BS in Education with a Spanish Specialization in 1978 and her M.A. in Education with a Sociology major in 1980, both from Texas A&M University in Kingsville, Texas, she earned her Counseling Certification in 1990 from Sul Ross State University. She completed her licensure requirements in 1994 to be licensed by The Texas State Board of Professional Counselors.

Lupita has extensive experience working with children and adolescents across various environments. She has worked in the public-school system at all levels. Primarily with high school students. She understands children’s and adolescents’ needs and how to highlight their strengths so that they can focus and use them, believe in themselves, and experience enhanced self-worth and success. She works in the areas of academic challenges, college preparation, ADHD, anxiety, depression, bereavement, low self-esteem, trauma, and life transition issues. She enjoys doing individual, couples, and family therapy, does Family Leave Act assessments and completes paperwork required, provides Employee Assistant Program Counseling, is certified as Trauma Specialist, and has worked with PTSD with military personnel. She uses the theoretical approaches of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Strength-Based Therapy and Motivational Interviewing.

Lupita is empathetic and caring. She will facilitate your counseling session in a way that you will be comfortable and willing to start doing the work that will create positive solutions for yourself or your child.
